Al-Shabab
Al-Shabab is otherwise known as “the Youth.” It has been notoriously known as a militant threat with an extremist following of Islamists. Based in Somalia, it has wreaked havoc on Mogadishu and several other neighboring regions. Thankfully, a union formed and commanded by the military in Africa had stopped the organization’s activities. This made the militant group leave major urban areas in recent times. Nevertheless, the resistance in war-torn Somalia regularly conducts violent attacks on the union power of Africa and the West along with residents in the area.
The country has been the victim of such havoc-wreaking extremist groups throughout its political history. Al-Ittihad al-Islami, according to experts, was the predecessor of this militant group and was responsible for training several of its officials. So, why has there been a sudden need for commandos in this region? Let’s find out.
Need For Commandos
The US military has asked President Biden to send multiple commandos to Somalia to stop al Qaeda’s local affiliate, al-Shabab, from spreading. Military leaders want to change the previous president’s (Donald Trump) orders that resulted in him withdrawing about 700 Marine Riders, Navy SEALs, and Army Green Berets from the stations in Somalia. These soldiers were preparing in an exclusive local unit to combat al-Shabab.
Pentagon dispatched the majority of American troops to Kenya and Djibouti. Since no pressure was put on Al-Shabab, there are chances they’re running around and continuing their reckless and destructive behavior that is impacting the Somalian lives.
Military’s Request to President Biden
The army has asked President Biden to return marines now deployed in Kenya and Djibouti and Kenya to Somalia. It is believed that even when the American soldiers restrict their activities to training and forego any ground fighting, they’ll be able to keep their eyes on the militant group.
Military leaders also claim that constant transit in and out of Somalia exposes US soldiers to needless hazards. Donald Trump issued this order so that there would be fewer conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now the military leaders urge President Biden to make the right call to better the situation in Somalia.
