Americans probably eat more apple pie than any other nation in the world. There’s a reason why they say, “As American as apple pie” and it’s because eating pie has literally become a way of life here in the USA.
Holiday seasons, celebrations, breakfast, dinner, and even snacks include pie; and often, eating pie is an occasion in itself.
The chances are that you already know most things there are to know about pie. However, there are a few lesser-known things that may come as a surprise to you.
Let’s dig in and find out what they are!
Pie Wasn’t Invented in America
Most Americans consider pie to be an American invention, which is untrue. The history of pies goes back centuries and ancient Egyptians and Romans were eating it long before we made it a cultural thing.
The recipes of Dutch apple pie have existed since the 1800s; however, it became a food icon in the USA during the 1900s.
With the arrival of immigrants and people from all around the world visiting the USA, pies, along with many other foods, such as hotdogs, became a part of our culture.
Apple Pie Wasn’t Always Famous!
Apple pies are all the rage these days; however, that wasn’t always the case. Meat pies were the original pies, in which the crust typically contained grain and fat and was the main focus of the pie. The filling was thus smaller.
Later, when the English settlers came to America, they started making pies with thinner crusts, which was only meant to hold the filling in place.
The Filling in Apple Shouldn’t be Cooked Beforehand
Typically, when you’re running out of time or need to make an extra batch, you’re likely to go to the nearest store and buy pre-made filling.
That’s not the right way to cook pies, especially if you want the right texture. It’s always best to cook the apples at the end so the crust isn’t left soft or soggy. For the best results, add the apple slices with the rest of the ingredients in the crust and then add the top layer.
The result will be perfect tartness and crispness.
