With so many brands out there touting their natural care for babies, you’re right to be a bit hesitant when buying products from them.
No worries though.
We’ve gotten the leading baby care brand Genio Baby to provide us with some tips on shopping for organic baby products, and what you should be aware of.
Tips on Shopping for Organic Baby Products
Know the Claims
A lot of companies throw around phrases and terms such as ‘fragrance-free’, ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘natural’, for sensitive skin’, but these are all claims, i.e. there’s nothing that proves their accuracy.
Even the term organic is regulated. Yet there are many companies that find loopholes around the rules. The best thing to do when searching for a good organic product is to look at the ingredient list, and understand what it means.
Learn to Read the Ingredient List, especially Petroleum-Derived Ingredients
Grab a baby skincare product nearby and search for the following ingredients:
- Propylene glycol
- Petrolatum (petroleum jelly)
- Mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum)
- Polysorbates (with a number at the end)
If any of the above is present in the ingredient list, you might have a substandard product on your hands. These ingredients are cheap, durable and available in abundance, but they’re also contaminated with toxins which can lead to allergies.
Learn Your Preservatives
While preservatives do prolong the product’s life, they’re not exactly useful for the consumer. Preservatives such as Parabens have been linked to skin and breast cancer, whereas phenoxyethanol has been known to depress the nervous system.
Benzyl alcohol has been linked to contact allergy. And these are just some of the preservatives that are used in abundance in baby and adult care products.
Stay Away From Fragrances
Synthetic fragrances use a lot of synthetic compounds which are derived from products such as coal tar and petroleum. These products have been known to cause disorders, birth defects and even cancer. But that’s not the worst part.
Because the ingredient list for fragrances are trade secrets, manufacturers are not required to list what they put in these fragrances, so we’re never able to know the truth.
Where to Shop for Organic Baby Products Online
Go for brands that present a complete description of the ingredients used in their products, from skin care products to baby cloth diapers. Companies such as Genio Baby offer a lot of information so customers can buy their products without hesitation.
Only trust such companies for your baby’s care. And use the tips above when you shop. You’ll enjoy the best products and your baby will be happier too!
