Yes, you read that right! You don’t have to buy disposable face masks every time when you can make your own.
But why would anyone want to make a face mask at home? Well, there are three reasons.
- One: Buying new face masks every time you head out can be an unnecessary expense for most people.
- Two: Disposable masks are the new plastic bags. They’re being disposed of improperly and are harming birds and marine life.
- Three: Nobody likes to flaunt a plain-looking mask that doesn’t even match their outfits!
Face masks are here to stay, so why not make them quirky and fun looking!
Take a look at how anyone can sew their own face mask and add a personal touch to it.
Gather the Materials
You don’t need to go out and buy a whole roll of fabric. Unless you’re providing these masks to charity, an old shirt’s fabric will do. However, ensure that it’s nice and clean.
Moreover, you’ll need to invest in a rubber band or fabric hair ties (if you’re someone who really wants to keep the environment clean).
You’ll also need a pair of scissors and a ruler or a tape measure.
Put Together the Mask
Now that you’ve assembled all of your materials, it’s time to prepare the face mask.
Layout the clean, old t-shirt, measure, and cut a rectangular piece in the middle of the shirt. You don’t want to end up with a mask that’s either too big or too small to cover your face. Ensure that these measurements perfectly cover your face.
Now that you have a rectangular piece, fold ¼ inch of the fabric to make a hem. Do this at the bottom, the top, and both sides of the fabric.
Ensure that you leave a little space between the side hems, and leave some room for the elastic bands.
Sew the Mask
Now that you’ve made the measurements, it’s time to indulge in some sewing action. Hold the hems in place, and run it through the sewing machine. Repeat this sewing action on all four sides of the mask.
Once everything is sewed in place, it’s time to run the elastic bands through the side hems.
Use a sewing needle to secure the elastic bands in place and Voila! You just made your own face mask in three simple steps.
