The Science behind Soft Water| How Does a Water Softener Work?

November 23, 2021

Do you feel your hair isn’t washed properly every time you take a shower, or does it take you an eternity to rub off the stains on your cutlery or your car? Before you doubt your cleaning skills, it’s better to check your home’s water quality.

Your water supply can contain calcium and magnesium, which makes the water hard. The hard water is known to damage your pipelines and make it difficult to clean different items. However, you can easily convert hard water into soft water using a water softener.

Water softeners are highly user-friendly machines, but if you want to know more about what goes on inside the machine when you use it, read on:

You’ll be surprised to know that a single water softener machine contains millions of microscopic resin beads that have a negative charge. Think of the insides of a water softener as a magnet. While the beads are negatively charged, calcium and magnesium are both positively charged.

Now, what happens when two oppositely charged particles are brought together? They are attracted to each other.

Step 2: Detaching the Minerals Using Sodium

Once all the minerals are attached to the resin beads, the machine uses sodium to transfer the minerals away from water. The sodium particle is heavily charged to ensure it doesn’t dissolve in the water and contaminate it.

Step 3: Regenerating

Once the minerals are detached, the machine flushes them down the drain to get rid of the contaminants. Water softeners are known to use brine solutions to clean the tank full of beads. Once all the waste material is disposed of and the machine is totally clean, you can use it again.
