We often see “self-confidence” in the list of things and resolutions we want to achieve every year. However, what we often fail to take a look at is the psychology behind self-confidence. In other words, one of the reasons why one fails to become self-confident is that they aren’t able to identify the factors that contribute to a person’s confidence. If you’re struggling to do the same, here are a few things you need to become self-confident.
Physical Safety
One of the factors that play the most significant role in a person’s increased self-confidence is physical safety. Increased fears and insecurities are some common reasons why a person continues to adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms to protect themselves. As a result, they don’t feel safe enough to feel confident in their abilities and identities.
Therefore, the first step to achieving self-confidence is employing measures to feel physical safety. Physical safety can be different things for different people. For some, it can mean satisfaction with their existing circumstances, while for others, it can be hopefulness for the future. It’s always a good idea to determine what will provide you with the physical safety you desire, and eventually move on to getting those things to feel confident about yourself and the life you’re living.
Emotional Safety
Another element that prevents a person from feeling suffocated and helpless during the process of becoming self-confident is emotional insecurity. Unlike physical safety, emotional safety has a lot to do with an individual’s internal struggle and the emotions that they’re failing to regulate.
This can include childhood trauma, deep-rooted physical insecurities, fear of being replaced or rejected, increased stress levels, escalated overthinking, and other similar obstacles. Such circumstances can often get in the way of a person trying to feel confident.
The best way to achieve emotional safety is by seeking help when it’s offered, speaking to the right people, surrounding yourself with individuals who understand what you’re experiencing, and adopting healthy practices to combat challenges.
Empowerment
We often synonymize self-confidence with empowerment. However, self-confidence often relies on a person’s ability to feel empowered. Despite being interlinked, they both aren’t necessarily the same thing. Empowerment has a lot to do with an individual’s ability to take charge of their life and circumstances without relying on anyone’s excessive support.
An empowered person eventually achieves the goal of becoming self-confident. It’s because they finally have the skills and techniques to take good care of themselves without having to struggle for it or depend on anybody else for it. An excellent way to feel empowered is by avoiding unsolicited opinions and focusing on your skills and how you can benefit from them.
Belief in Oneself
Self-confidence is also one of the best gifts one gets as a result of achieving the truest form of self-love. People often struggle to determine what self-love means and what it looks like. The best way to describe it is a belief in oneself. When you’re truly confident in your talents and strengths, you have the power to take over the world, and that’s all self-love is all about.
Believing in yourself and not letting your weaknesses define you can help you heal from your past traumas and fall in love with yourself as a unique individual who has a lot to offer. The thought of believing in oneself often works as a reassurance that you’re confident and capable enough to pull off anything that you put your mind to.
Acceptance of Emotions
Emotions are an important element that play a critical role in determining one’s ability to feel self-confident. One can’t possibly feel proactive and capable of performing their desired role in life without accepting that they’re human and that their emotions are valid.
Furthermore, the acceptance of your emotions is the primary step towards overcoming challenging emotions and rising as a confident individual. Therefore, it’s always good to take a step back and take the time you need to accept the emotions you’re feeling and resolve issues from there.
