Summer calls for beach, drinks, and volleyball. Make the most of this season by bonding with the people you’re close to over a game of volleyball!
If you don’t already know how to prepare for beach volleyball, fear not! We’re here to guide you through everything you need to know.
You can’t just dive into a game of beach volleyball when you know nothing about it. Prepare beforehand and know the game before you get into it. You won’t have a sturdy, flat ground under your feet for this game; you have to play on sand. This is challenging as there’s more friction with sand: it slows one down, requires more energy, and reduces your jump.
Before you go for a game, practice walking, jumping, running around on the beach a couple of times to make your body used to the way the sand feels; it helps your footwork and ups your serving skill.
2. Volleyball Equipment
One of the reasons beach volleyball is just so great is that you don’t have to spend too much on the equipment. Of course, a volleyball is a must (remember, beach volleyball is not the same as indoor volleyball), and so is a net. Plan and check out your local beach to see if it already has some permanent nets set up.
For your attire, wear loose clothing like tank tops and shorts (you can also opt for socks). To prevent sunburn, always carry an SPF 30+ sunscreen with you because sunburns are the worst. Get yourself a hat and BreakWater shades to complete the look.
3. Learn The Rules
Now that you’ve prepared yourself and have the necessary attire and equipment, you have to learn beach volleyball rules. There are two teams, and each side gets three touches to return the ball. If a ball hits the ground, that’s a point. There are three sets in a match, and the team that wins two sets wins. You need 21 points to win a set, and teams switch sides after seven points. Players are not rotated except those that serve.
Lastly, remember it’s just a game! Take this as an opportunity to enjoy the sun, the beach, and the salty air.
