Gun Maintenance 101: Cleaning Your Carry Gun

Out of all things discussed about firearms and gun safety, gun cleaning and maintenance is one that doesn’t come up to often.

Now don’t get us wrong, there are shooters who go down to their local range every weekend and fire hundreds of rounds. These guys generally keep their guns well-maintained as it’s a necessity for them. They just can’t afford any malfunctions as they use their guns on such a regular basis. The people we’re talking about are those who don’t hit the range regularly but still conceal carry on a daily basis.

Many of us fall into the latter category, and that’s completely fine. However, firearm maintenance is even more important for people who carry a firearm on their person regularly, but don’t actually use it for long periods of time.

You see, a gun is a machine, and like most other machines, it needs to be used and maintained regularly to perform at its best. You don’t want to be the guy whose gun looks like the lint trap of an old dryer, right?

Why Cleaning Your Gun periodically is Important?

When you regularly carry a gun in your waistband, materials such as lint and dust accumulate inside it over time. If you carry your gun without cleaning it for 3 to 6 months, the barrel and the Magwell are likely to get filled with grime. Now, unmaintained firearms can potentially become unreliable. The debris collected inside the gun can cause abrasions, which can result in unusual bullet ignition. Therefore, it’s advisable to clean your gun at least once every 3 months.

Examining Your Carry Ammo Regularly

When you insert and release your magazine over and over again, it affects your carry ammo. Therefore, it’s important to inspect your carry ammo on a regular basis. It’s recommended that you shoot out or replace your carry ammo every 6 months or every one year at max. It won’t cost you a lot of money and will increase your confidence in your carry gun. Performing regular maintenance on your carry gun will ensure that you’re always ready for situations where you may need to defend yourself.

However, when you do clean your gun, make sure that you follow all the safety protocols and ensure that the gun is unloaded before you disassemble it. Stay safe out there guys!
