Water & Electrolytes
Staying hydrated and energized during the game is important, even if you’re only practicing. You must have seen tennis players emerge with two different bottles during changeovers. One of these usually contains water while the other has a colored liquid inside. The latter is an electrolyte drink, most commonly made using electrolyte tablets.
Water and electrolyte drinks help replenish the lost minerals from the body. These include magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium, which are all important for promoting optimal performance and preventing muscle cramps. Keep a few electrolyte tablets with you to pop into a water bottle whenever needed. Or, if you want to make your electrolyte intake a more organic process, do what Novak Djokovic does on court: eat raw dates for some additional calcium and magnesium!
Here’s an unlikely item you’d be surprised to learn is essential for tennis practice. A jump rope is the perfect way to activate your muscles and your mind as you get ready to play some tennis. In fact, studies have shown that 10 minutes of jumping rope is equivalent to getting 30 minutes of running.
You can incorporate a jump-rope routine at the beginning of your practice or include it somewhere in the middle. Not only will this boost your cardiovascular health, but will also help you improve your footwork for tennis.
Another thing you need to keep in your tennis bag is a bunch of extra grips. These items tend to wear out easily, especially if you practice for extended periods. Moreover, the longer you practice wearing the same grips, the sweatier they’ll get.
Not only is it gross to have your grips drenched in sweat, but it also makes playing tennis difficult. Sweat makes them slippery, causing them to fall apart. Thus, make sure you have an extra set of grips in your bag to prevent this from happening. You don’t want to try and hit the ball, only to have the grips come apart!
