There are two types of people in the world: those who love doing laundry, and those who hate it—and you’re definitely not alone if it’s one of the most loathsome tasks for you.
But unfortunately, you can’t escape doing laundry as part of your daily life, and sometimes that includes vacations too.
Especially longer vacations such as those where you’re staying in a luxury vacation rental that includes laundry units, closets, and plenty of space to get comfortable in.
If you’re dreading the task of managing laundry during your vacation, keep these tips and tricks in mind:
1. Carry travel safe versions of your favorite detergents
While you’re likely to find products in other cities too, you could prepare ahead of time by stashing a small number of laundry essentials in your toiletry bag, just enough for a couple of loads, and especially if you don’t want to repurchase and carry a whole bottle back home.
It helps to use airtight bags with secure seals, so there’s no spillage or any leaks, and your other belongings stay safe.
2. Don’t wait for too long before doing a load
It might be in your best interest to do a couple of loads of laundry every week or so. This will make packing for your trip easy, too, because you’ll only need to keep as many clothes, underwear, and essentials as necessary, then wash and re-wear them.
It’s also easier to mix and match outfits and save on packing space when you’re able to wash and reuse tops and bottoms.
3. Take turns with your other housemates and split tasks.
If you’re sharing the home with multiple others, take days to do your separate loads, or designate laundry duty to a couple of people who can handle it.
The beauty of a vacation home is that it’s easy to do chores and feel right at home. However you do it, have a system that makes it easier on everyone.
4. Store as you go, so planning is easier.
Don’t fall into the trap of procrastination. No matter how busy your vacation is, take time out to store away your clothes. Clutter is the enemy of peace, and you want your vacation home to be a haven, not a reminder of the daily grind.
Another handy trick is once you’re done washing clothes and draw closer to the end of your trip, put clothes away in your bags and suitcases.
This has two advantages; it’s easier to pack before you move out and unpack when you’re home because all you have to do is put things away. And it also helps you identify which outfits you’ve worn recently.
