4 Signs That Show Your Dog Is Comfortable Around You

January 4, 2021

Did you recently bring home a pup from the pound, and you’re confused whether they’re comfortable around you yet? It happens to the best of us! One of the biggest concerns of being a pet parent is ensuring your dog leads a happy, healthy life. It can be devastating to find out your dog isn’t at ease around you.

Research has shown that dogs are incredibly intuitive to emotions, so if you’re feeling the slightest bit fearful or experiencing any other negative emotion, know that your furry friend will pick up on it. Here’s how you can tell if your dog is comfortable and happy in your presence.

Eye Contact

Having a loving relationship with your dog is often exhibited through direct eye contact. If your dog’s looking you in the eye, they’re greatly attached to you, this is also indicated through high oxytocin levels in their systems, i.e., a love hormone.

One way of strengthening your bond with your furry friend is to look directly in their eyes when you’re speaking to them. This is because meeting their gaze conveys that you trust and respect them.

Frequent Check-Ins

Your dog doesn’t have to be glued to your side all the time to be relaxed around you. But if they have a strong bond with you, they will check in on you from time to time, especially in a new situation. Listening when you call out to them can also help you determine if they’re contented around you.

Even if you’re out hiking on a trail and your bonded pet runs ahead of you, they’re likely to turn back and check if you’re still close by. You can also rely on the fact that they’re far less likely to run away.

Excited to See You

If your dog freaks out when you get home, does a little dance, or experiences a case of the zoomies, it’s a no-brainer that they love having you around. You’ll see it in their noisy tail-wagging or when they’re jumping on you to lick your face and show some love. This reflects a strong bond with your furry friend that contributes to your pet’s healthy life.

Relaxed Body Language

Aside from the initial burst of excitement, if your dog’s body language is relaxed around you, that means you’ve got a good relationship going. You can tell from their soft facial expression, slightly open mouth with a lolling tongue, or rolling over so you can rub their belly.

Your dog is also comfortable in your presence if they’re wagging their tail from side to side, blinking their eyes, or bowing as an invite to play with them. Seeking out pets, snuggles, and leans means they’re happy around you and are looking for some TLC.
