If you’ve even been to a fine art exhibition and thought that the paintings weren’t made by professionals, you aren’t alone. Sometimes, spotting a beginner’s artwork is easy. But how does one identify if the artwork is really amateurish?
Well, there are some common mistakes that painters make, which leads to mediocre artwork. Here’s our portrait painter online outlining 4 of them!
1. Not using neutral or grey harmonies wisely
Neutrals are some of the most interesting colours in a painting.
But when does colour become neutral? When you extract a pure colour from the colour wheel’s outer ring and mix it with a colour that’s not adjacent to it. If you want to make it more neutral, move further around the wheel.
So, what’s the most neutral mix? Simple; the direct complement across the wheel. Once you understand how to make these neutrals, you can easily control their temperatures.
2. Not paying attention to the colour key
Both colour intensity and harmony must be planned before beginning with the painting. The colour choices influence the mood of a painting.
A good painting will have a colour harmony that either moves into a tried approach, which splits the difference between the colour (for example, violet, green, and orange) and the complement, or depends on a complementary palette (for instance, orange and blue or green and red, which are direct complements).
3. Not creating the right block-in
Since arranging and rearranging elements is easy at this point, this is one of the most important stages of a painting.
Tonal and colour decisions should also be taken at this stage. There’s no need to get into details because you’re going for the relative massing of the painting. In the block-in, shadow and light are established.
If it doesn’t feel right during this phase, it probably won’t feel right at the end.
4. Average drawing
Many individuals try to rush with their painting, not thinking that drawing well is their first priority. If you rush the drawing of your painting, it’ll show in your final painting.
