CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
CPR is an emergency first aid procedure performed on a person going into cardiac arrest. When a person goes into cardiac arrest their heart stops functioning and stops pumping blood.
Performing chest compressions by pushing down hard and fast in the center of the patient’s chest and letting it come back up naturally can save their life. Keep performing CPR while waiting for medical help to arrive. (Compressions should be done by a trained person only, there is much more involved than just doing compressions)
Bleeding
Severe bleeding can lead to death because of shock and loss of blood. It’s important to control the bleeding while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Rinse the wound with water and if that isn’t possible, cover it with gauze or a cloth.
Apply pressure on the wound to make the blood clot and stop the bleeding. Add more layers of cloth if it the blood soaks through while keeping pressure on injury. Get the patient to the hospital immediately if the bleeding is severe.
Burns
Burns can be of varying degrees and should be treated depending on their severity. The first step is to rinse the burn with cool, running water and apply a light bandage on top of it. Do not ice the burns or apply oil or any ointment. Seek medical help and advice for relief of pain.
Choking
Choking on food can lead to loss of consciousness and even death. The Heimlich maneuver is a first aid process performed on anyone who is not an infant that is choking. It is performed by standing behind the person choking and making them lean forward.
Then make a fist and clench it with your other hand. Put your arms around their waist and pull the clenched first backward and forward under their ribcage 5 times quickly. Repeat until they cough up what they’re choking on. (Training for this maneuver is advised before performing)
