3 Home Gardening Tips for Beginners

April 29, 2021

Gardening is more than just an environment-friendly outdoor activity. It has been found to positively impact our mental health and holds a therapeutic power. Unsurprisingly, then, gardening is a popular recreational activity among homeowners in the United States.

Just getting started with your home garden? Here’s what you need to remember.

Know Your Plants’ Watering Needs

Many people think that looking after plants is easy because all they have to do is water them. However, watering your plants is much trickier than it looks. You need to understand your plants’ watering needs to ensure that it doesn’t die because of too much or too little water.

Each plant has specific watering requirements. Some need to be watered more often; some can survive without water for a couple of days. Either way, you need to know precisely how often you need to water each of the plants in your garden so that you can ensure their longevity.

Another thing you need to know is that overwatering your plants is just as bad as underwatering them. To determine if your plants need to be watered, poke your fingers into the soil surrounding each plant. If dirt sticks to your fingers, it’s a sign that your plants do not need to be watered. On the other hand, if the soil feels dry, and barely any of it sticks to your finger, it indicates that your plants could do with some H2O.

Consider Using Containers

It’s tempting to utilize your landscape and sow seeds in the freshly prepared land. However, it’s recommended that you also use containers for your gardening project, especially if you don’t have a lot of space available.

Plants require sufficient space to grow. If you sow all your seeds in one place, you’re at risk of overcrowding your garden. You’re also more likely to have a disorganized garden with no proper categories separating each plant type. Avoid either of these scenarios by investing in different-sized containers and pots for your plants.

Label All of Your Plants

Finally, make sure you’re labeling the different plant varieties in your garden. Without labels, you’re likely to forget which plant is which. This could affect how you look after your plants and get in the way of you following specific instructions for specific plants.

Whether you’ve planted bulbs in freshly prepared land or arranged a bunch of potting plants in your balcony, make sure you have labels for the different types of seeds used.
